If you haven't seen any of my Youtube videos (and you really, really should!) you'll notice that I cap off every episode by reminding people that they are loved, strong, and powerful. Today, I wanted to go a little bit into why I chose those three.
There are so many affirmations out there and I love a lot of them. I am worthy, I am enough, etc. are amazing, but they weren't the ways I wanted to end off my videos. I wanted something that would be really empowering.
As I travel through the world where I live, I pick up on "vibes" everywhere I go. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm an empath, but I do have an uncanny ability to pick up on people's hidden motivations and rationales. What has struck me time and again are how many people feel unloved. This comes in a million different ways.
First of all, loneliness is nearly an epidemic here in America. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey in 2018, 1/5 of all Americans considered themselves often or always lonely. Recent surveys have shown that the problem has only gotten more substantial, as we've gone through two years of pandemic and quarantine. The New York Health Department found that 57% of survey respondants claimed to be lonely some or most of the time. For seniors living alone, it's a crisis.
You may wonder what loneliness has to do with feeling unloved, but to me the parallels are pretty obvious. If you're genuinely alone and you have almost no social outlets, you feel unloved. Even if you have regular socialization but you still feel lonely, chances are that you're struggling with loving yourself.
We all want to be loved. In fact, I think most of us need to be loved. And most of us want to love people back. So, if all I can do with my signoff is to remind people that they're loved, then I feel like I'm making a positive change in their life.
The same goes with "You are strong" and "You are powerful". I think it's really easy in the modern world to feel weak and powerless. We went through 2+ years where a virus that's so small that we can't see it has led to the deaths of 1 million Americans and several million more worldwide. We're several months into the Ukraine-Russia War. Inflation is through the roof and it's getting harder for people to buy groceries and pay rent. For a lot of people, it feels like the deck if stacked against them. It's for this reason that I like to remind people that they are strong.
"You are powerful" is the most important one to me, though, because I think the vast, vast majority of people don't understand the power they contain just by their very existence. When you think of people who made big, big changes in the world, they weren't people who had exceptional physical abilities or even the most sharp minds. They were ordinary people who simply were willing to step into their own personal power and let it lead the way. They simply understood their power and went with it. We all contain that power within us, but it's beaten out of us (sometimes literally) as we grow up. Your power is innate. It's natural. It's simply a part of who you are. There is not one person who is more powerful than you are, there are simply people who understand their power in a different way.
As I sign off of this post, I think you for reading And as always I'd like to remind you that you are loved, you are strong, and you are powerful.
