The Rules of the Mind: The Words You Use and the Pictures You Create

One of my favorite things that Marisa Peer, founder of Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT), talks about are her rules of the mind. These are the basic tenets of how people tick. She has several rules of the mind which I'll cover in future blog posts, but one of her most poignant ones is that your mind loves to follow a blueprint: It follows the words that you use and the pictures that you create in your mind.

I think we can all agree that words can be powerful things. We all can remember that time when someone used words against us to make us feel bad. We can think about words that have inspired us and words that have hurt us. In this rule of the mind, however, words become our blueprints. Our minds love following patterns and they will follow the words that you use as well as the pictures you create in your head. This is why it is important to be specific and positive with the words that we use about ourselves. Our minds will follow those words that we use and put them into action.

This is why it is so important that we make use of some choice statements in our own mind:

Tell yourself frequently that "I Am Enough". So many people believe that they alone are not enough, but it is so crucial to keep reminding yourself that in all circumstances, you are enough. You don't have to justify your existence to anybody. Just by being you and being on this planet, you are enough.

Tell yourself "I am worthy". Similarly, worthiness is an issue that so many people have problems with. It doesn't matter what has happened in your past, whether it be good or bad, you are worthy. Make these words one of your mantras.

There are so many other mantras you can create besides "I am enough" and "I am worthy". Consider writing them down and placing them in places where you'll see the words frequently, like on your computer desktop or on your mirror or even on your car dashboard. You'll be surprised how placing positive affirmations around in visible places make such a difference in your life.

But be careful about the words you use, as well, because your brilliant mind can follow your input in interesting ways. Let's say for example that you choose the statement "I want more attention". Your mind, brilliant as it is, can find lots of ways of giving you attention. Heck, it could even cause you to have explosive gas in public (what a way of getting attention!). So, be specific about the words that you use. Instead of simply telling yourself "I want attention" maybe elaborate and say "I want positive attention by being charming, confident, and outgoing." Sometimes being specific with your words makes all the different in the world.

The words that we use are powerful things and really set our mind into motion. So, watch out for the words that you use about yourself. Our own inner dialogue can either set us up for success or can hinder our progress. So always remember that the words you use are powerful things!
